Greatest Generation Lessons blog

Blog is all about how certain character traits were the foundation of an earlier generation and how those same character traits can help us in our daily lives today. Yes, this is the story of my family prior to and during World War II, but in many respects, it’s the story of every family that lived through this period in our history. This is the story of an ordinary family, trying to live an ordinary life, during an extraordinary time frame.

This blog is based on 2 boxes of letters I found in my father’s closet after he had passed away. I had moved to California to care for my Mom. A few days later, when I opened the boxes, I realized that they were filled with letters, pictures and memorabilia from my Dad’s life more than 50 years earlier.

I knew that my Dad, known as Lad to family and friends, had worked for a few years in Venezuela in his early 20’s but I didn’t realize that when he and his younger brother Dan went to South America, my grandfather started writing letters to them every Sunday night, and that this task continued for 7 and a half years! I was looking at all those letters, my grandfather’s autobiography, plus letters from childhood friends and family to my Dad, letters from Mom and Dad to my Grandfather during those years and all the pictures and other memorabilia associated with them.

I immediately knew that I had to tell the story of this “Slice of Life”. As I copied hundreds of letters, I read bits and pieces, and certain stories stuck in my mind as examples of the way their generation was raised.

My hope is that these stories will help you build bridges between the generations of your family and reinforce the importance of the character traits that were commonplace during that time.
