Barbara Rath Blog

I’ve always wanted to write, but told myself I was too busy. Really though, I was afraid to share my stories publicly.

In 2013, at the Massachusetts Conference for Women, I confronted that fear. I came home determined to write two blog post per week for 52 weeks. My hope was that by finding my courage to write I’d find my voice and follow what had been my lifelong dream.

Now, five years later, several of my short stories have been published, and I’m revising my first novel. Perhaps someday that will be published too!

Here is my post about how I battled back my fears with this post about finding the Courage to WriteRead here the whole story !

Objects and the distance between them blog

Objects, and the Distance Between Them Blog

Objects, and the Distance Between Them Blog

I write daily poetry and other creative writing, speaking to whatever is currently occurring in my life or happens to be in the forefront of my mind. This ends up encompassing a wide range of topics but I primarily write about relationships, love, mental health, time, light, and energy. I write as a creative outlet as well as to express myself and connect with others.

When I started my blog, most of my writing dealt with an ongoing divorce and my personal mental health struggles. It has since evolved, and though these topics still surface from time to time, they are no longer central.

I have also worked with several relationships defined as muses. I had never really worked with a muse relationship before and neither had any of them – it was a new experience and brought about some very inspired writing. I have since, inevitably it seems, fallen deeply in love with one particular muse, Blackbird, whom a majority of my writing either is about or to.

I found myself in a place of great darkness at the beginning of 2018, and realized that I needed to speak or my words would swallow me alive. I began posting with no real goal, other than to share my story and release the built up writing. I began this journey with the (rather foolish) intent of remaining distant and anonymous, but have since come to love this community, finding new meaning in the relationships I have built and the perspectives I have gained. I am slowly working to open myself up, and feel I have gained a family of sorts in those I have come to love here. I am inspired every day by the stories and poetry others share, the experience I encounter in my life, and those who I share this journey with.

Before Sundown blog

Remember what made you smile – Before Sundown Blog

After years working in healthcare, I retired as a nurse practitioner to be a full time writer, co-author, and blogger. From the blog’s beginning in 2014, Before Sundown has been honored with awards, and blog tours. I’m ever grateful, and appreciative of dedicated worldwide followers who like, comment, share and tweet posts.

I started the blog to connect with other bloggers, and in a way to learn more about writing. I also wanted to support other bloggers, friends and family by writing blog posts about them, their books, interests, professions and travels.

The collections of sunsets/sunrises on the Welcome page came from bloggers all over the world. I wanted visitors to remember what made you smile Before SundownWhat better way then to offer breathtaking sunsets or sunrises? A monthly featured sunset continues.

Book excerpts can be found as permanent pages on the blog’s menu section. I’m writing Sunset Inna fiction book based on real events and people, and made up events and people. My favorite made up person is Eric Herrmann, a Jewish medical doctor, who is the main character Elizabeth’s “beau.” He’s the biggest help in Elizabeth’s search to uncover her famous real grandfather’s secret life in Germany, the theme of the book. Just so you know, Elizabeth is the real me. With all the grandfather research and historical parts, the story just needed a sparked up nurse/doctor romance.

Fun Facts About Me

I’m old as dirt, born in the late 1930s, and plan to live beyond the 100-year mark.

I love whimsy and humor, something I try to interject into blog posts and writing.

I modeled for an Illustrator Photographer as a teenager, and was featured on east coast billboards; Give Life a Lift in West Palm Beach – Tropical Florida’s First Resort. I had jet-black hair and violet eyes, just like Elizabeth Taylor.

I published poetry years ago, and that led me to write “free rein for the brain” fiction.

I attended the same university as my sons, and at the same time. I also knew their girlfriends there (now wives). I was an honorary Frat Mom, and a designated driver.

I lived in Italy, Greece and Japan (5 years in each country). The highlight, traveling and skiing the Matterhorn (Italian Alps), and ski slopes in France, Austria and Switzerland.

I was a tech challenged blogger at the beginning in 2014, and I “learned by fire” how to put the WordPress site together and keep it “blazing” with published posts, and The Sunrise and Sunset Photo Gallery

Typewriter Girl Blog

My blog is called Typewriter Girl.
When I was little, I had a typewriter and, having an active imagination, I would type stories of adventures and escape. I must have typed hundreds of stories. Many years later, and being older, I had a desire to capture what was happening in my life instead of just collecting photos in my mobile phone gallery, never to be looked at again. And so,  I returned to typing, this time on a laptop, to start my personal blog.

My blog is about sharing little snippets of my life and about the things I love and which inspire me. From places I visit, to my beloved dog Boris, to the beauty in nature I see around me, I share my thoughts and photographs  on my blog and hope that in some small way they might inspire others too.

Thumb Wind blog

Thumb Wind blog

Thumb Wind started as a result of the start of wind energy development in the Thumb region. Wind farm developers were signing up and locking in lease rights to just about every square inch of Michigan’s Upper Thumb and we were concerned. We feared we would see looming 20 story wind turbines everywhere including offshore. Many of my initial posts were stories about wind development. The most popular area is our wind farm map which provides detailed information on every wind farm project in Michigan.

However, I was encouraged to expand the scope of Thumbwind and soon I was covering other local events and capturing unique places, sites and things to do in Michigan’s Upper Thumb. Readers responded positively to posts about the Cheeseburger Festival in Caseville and padding to Turnip Rock so I kept going.

Today there are over 300 posts dealing with topics like art galleries near Port Austin to the wild and crazy history of the Michigan Upper Thumb region. One topic in particular, the Ora Labora colony that existed from 1862-1867 received so much attention that I created a site dedicated to its study with ora-labora.org.

I hope to expand coverage in the future to include all of Michigan’s Saginaw Bay. I’ve been looking for contributors to expand our cope to include such great towns as Tawas and Au Gres.

Dancing words blog

Dancing words blog

What motivated me to write is simply the tag line of my blog . ” When my heart is full I reach to my pen to pour out. That’s my way to empty myself . And I believe to it’s very much needed to create space for new things in life.

My writing are just a reflection of everything I see and experience in my life and in people around me. For a long time, I kept the writings to myself . What motivated me to start the blog was simply a demotivating and dull phase in my career ( academics) , as I am still a student . And I felt the need of something to start something new in life.

double genealogy the adoption witness blog

Double genealogy the adoption witness blog

I never intended to write a book, or blog. I wrote a book, and now, I blog, in order to sell the book, so said my publisher. I wrote the book because mine is a skeptical family, who will scorn me out if proven to have offered an uninformed conclusion. If I don’t sell a book, I feel anyway, that I met my mission.

My mission seemed simple; to find my grandfather’s birth document and identify his mother’s heritage from mid-19th century Scotland, and then to inform my family. First half done; second, to roll out this week. The effort, though, revealed that his birth was illegitimate, and he was adopted outside his biological family. Same for his non-related cousin. Such posed huge problems for moving forward. I was able to propose eight parents to cover the two adoptees. However, typical of their time, there existed no documents of adoption, and story-telling had to substitute for DNA certainty, over parent selection.

How to present the tons of “proof” data, from a five year research effort? Write, cite and caveat. Then to throw it up to the cloud so my worldwide family could capture, and others could cannibalize? Or, copyright. So now, the researcher who is not a writer, is stuck with a book and a blog. OK, I admit, it is fun.
