I study photography with the Open College of the Arts, and we are required to start a blog in order that we can evidence our progress and development throughout the course, and as a means of submitting our assignments.
But that’s not where my journey with photography began.
Two years ago, I was on the brink of suicide due to overwhelming anxiety and paranoia. I was unable to go outside and couldn’t cope with life. A friend was very firm that something needed to change, so I ordered a camera. Very slowly and tentatively I started to go outdoors with a camera. Five minutes was more than enough to start with, but over a period of months this increased. I felt a level of safety having a camera in front of my face, and also that photography became my mindfulness practice. It never took my paranoia or anxiety away, but it helped me to cope with it.
I have progress so far since then, and on a good day I can even go up to strangers and ask them if I can take their photo. Photography has become a passion for me and this ignited my desire to study.
Although my studies are predominant on my blog, I try and use my studies to explore mental health, and especially eating disorders, along with other sociological themes.
Creative writing, poetry and essay writing are important to me and can also be found on my blog, along with a gallery of photos that are not related to my studies.
